Making a Healthy Profit in a Slower Economy

During his presentation at the ATA Leadership Conference, Bob Costello predicted a slower economy until the end of 2008.

Keeping in mind that "the economy makes us and we make the economy", what can leaders do to be profitable in a potentially slower economy?
  1. Get your team together to identify ways to be successful in the current business environment - do a SWOT Analysis and set new goals.  Resist the tendency to 'wait it out'.
  2. Establish or review your organizational values, vision, mission before you decide if and where you will make cutsOne of our clients has made the decision to stay committed to his value of people development because he has learned over the past year that when developed correctly, people are not a cost but an investment.
  3. Identify ways to improve productivity of each employee, especially managers and the sales team.  Can you reshuffle people or consolidate jobs? Without a 'productivity review', it's likely many hours are being spent on less productive activities.

What We Learned at the ATA Leadership Conference

  • Karen & the ATA Staff and the Rich & Lisa Bren team make it better each year!
  • Under Bill Wolpert's leadership, the Cummins team is quite resourceful - just for the record, they followed all of the stated rules during the 007 game!
  • Becki Ewing is very talented and hard working - thanks, Becki, for assembling all those room gift bags.
  • Jim Williams, Kevin Knight and David Sly have a future in acting.
  • Larry Woolson has done a tremendous job.  Thanks Larry for your  dedication!
  • Dave Williams promises to be an awesome leader.

Regards, Linda and Tery Tennant

Are You Throwing $ Down a Black Hole?

Do you know that within two weeks you will forget most of what you learned at the ATA conference?
Studies show that knowledge retention will drop to less than 10% after two weeks if you don't put proper reinforcement in place - actual impact on the job will be even less.

Organizations spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year on training.  The results of certain kinds of training, such as technical training, are easy to track.  But other kinds, like productivity or leadership development, require careful thinking to insure a good return on investment (ROI).

Consider the following hypothetical situation. Joe is one of your recently promoted supervisors.  You want to get Joe off to a good start so you send him to a one day leadership seminar.  Afterwards, Joe says he learned a lot of great things and thanked you for sending him. You are happy because you feel your investment will payoff. The hard reality is you probably won't see much ROI because it may be a challenge for Joe to apply the information.
